Banco Central do Brasil

The official exchange rates for the Brazilian Real (BRL) are published daily by the Banco Central do Brasil (BCB) from Monday to Friday around 12:00 UTC-3 time. This report is an html document containing 156 currencies, from which 135 are free floating currency values, making it one of the most complete exchange rates publication in the world.

This plug-in was first included with foxer currency calculator in version 9.10. In later version 10.1 the historical Euro currencies were removed, but the remaining 21 pegged currencies have been kept.

BRL Historical series

Banco Central do Brasil does not publish any specific historical file, but historical series since 1999.01.02 can be retrieved on demand for every month from the calendar.

Note that for long historical files like this, there is a higher chance of failing to recover modern coins because they did not exist at the time.

Economic relevance

Brazil is the 13th largest economy in the world by nominal GDP and the fifth-largest country. It has a population of more than 200 million and it is dominated geographically by the Amazon River and the world’s largest rain forest.

It also has the second-largest manufacturing sector in the Americas. Accounting for 28.5 percent of GDP, Brazil’s industries range from automobiles, steel and petrochemicals to computers, aircraft, and consumer durables.

The service sector is the largest component of the gross domestic product (GDP) at 67.0 percent, followed by the industrial sector at 27.5 percent. Agriculture represents 5.5 percent of GDP (2011). The Brazilian labor force is estimated at 100.77 million of which 10 percent is occupied in agriculture, 19 percent in the industry sector and 71 percent in the service sector.

As of late 2010, Brazil’s economy is the largest in Latin America and the second largest in the Americas. From 2000 to 2012, Brazil was one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world, with an average annual GDP growth rate of over 5%. Its GDP surpassed that of the United Kingdom in 2012, temporarily making Brazil the world’s sixth-largest economy.

However, Brazil’s economic growth decelerated in 2013 and the country entered a recession in 2014. The economy started to recover in 2017, but without the previous strength.

Brazil is a member of diverse economic organizations, such as Mercosur, Unasul, G8+5, G20, WTO, Paris Club and the Cairns Group.
